Bone marrow transplant: UK centres

Kings College Hospital
King's College Hospital in London is a leading UK centre for bone marrow transplant

Bone marrow transplants are most often used to treat patients with certain types of cancer such as leukaemia, aplastic anaemia, Hodgkin's disease, multiple myeloma and lymphoma. There has been some experimental use of bone marrow transplants to treat other cancers such as breast cancer and kidney cancer.

The bone marrow consists of blood cells contained in the centre of the bones. Before the bone marrow transplant takes place, the patient’s existing cells are destroyed using radiotherapy or chemotherapy.

A bone marrow transplant enables doctors to treat cancers such as leukaemia aggressively with large doses of chemotherapy or radiotherapy which destroy abnormal cells produced in the body. A transplant means that the normal and abnormal cells damaged by the treatment can be replaced by healthy cells and can increase the chances that the cancer will not recur or extend the period during which the patient is free of the disease.  Bone marrow may be donated by a donor or by the patient himself/herself (an autologous transplant) during a disease free period.

Private bone marrow transplants

Because of the costs and expertise involved, there are few centres for private bone marrow transplants in the UK. Those private services that exist are in the major London private hospitals or are available through the private patient services within NHS trusts.
