CT scanning in the UK

Nuffield Health provides CT scanning services through their national network of hospitals. Their experienced consultants and nurses are friendly and approachable, and can answer any questions that you may have.

CT scan consultation

At your appointment, you will meet your radiographer who will be an expert in CT scanning. The radiographer will be with you through the whole process, from explaining the scan and answering your questions beforehand, to performing the actual scan.

Your CT scan appointment can take up to 40 minutes, and you’ll be lying down on the scanning bed for around half of this time. For some scans, you can bring a CD to listen to while you are in the scanner, and you can also bring a friend with you, no problem.

Your radiographer can see and hear you at all times during the CT scan and can communicate with you using an intercom. If you feel claustrophobic during the scan, you can tell your radiographer immediately. Read more about CT scanning at Nuffield Health; download more information from their website.

What is a CT scan?

Computerised Tomography (CT) - also commonly known as "CAT Scan" (Computerised Axial Tomography) provides clear three-dimensional images of body organs and their structure. These can be seen much more clearly than with conventional X-rays. The CT scans can help doctors to make an early and accurate diagnosis.

CT scan precautions

Some people should not have an CT scan. If you are, or might be pregnant please contact Nuffield Health.

CT scan risks

Nuffield Health understands that it is important for you to know any risks involved in your scan, no matter how small. A CT scan uses special X-rays. And, like all X-rays, their use is subject to strict regulation and only performed when clinically necessary to help diagnose a problem. The radiation dose involved in a CT scan is kept to a minimum. We are all exposed to small amounts of radiation every day as it is naturally present in the atmosphere. This is called ‘background radiation’.
