What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition which is characterised by a reduction in the density of bone, and results in brittle bones. Brittle bones can break easiliy. Osteoporosis is a disease which can develop without symptoms for decades. In many cases, the first real "symptom" of osteoporosis is a broken bone.

Osteoporosis affects one in three women and one in 12 men over the age of 50 in the UK. If you want to find out more about what puts you at risk of this fragile bone disease then try this simple quiz provided by the National Osteoporosis Society.

Osteoporosis screening

Our Featured Provider, Lifescan, is a specialist health screening company, offering osteoporosis screening bone scans at centres across the UK.

Since osteoporosis can develop "silently" with no obvious symptoms, the only reliable way to determine whether ostoporosis is present is to have a bone density scan, also known as a bone mineral density (BMD) test, dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan, or simply a bone scan.

It is a painless and non-invasive bone scan which, depending on the technology, measures bone density in the hip, spine, wrist, heel or hand.
