Gastrointestinal surgery, often referred to as GI surgery, is a "sub specialty" of general surgery that focuses on the gastrointestinal tract. This can include operations on the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine and colon, the pancreas and liver.
There are many operations involving the gastrointestinal tract that are best done by general surgeons with specialist expertise in the area. Some surgeons may specialise in 'upper GI' surgery, some in "lower GI" surgery.
